Pneumonia Or Common Cold?

The common cold or head cold has been with us since time immemorial. It has always been considered a mild condition that may cause some discomfort at the most. Today, evidence shows that the viruses that cause the common cold can sometimes cause infections in deeper tissues such as the lung, leading to cases of pneumonia. While most of these are mild “walking pneumonias,” we can sometimes encounter more severe disease that causes serious complications. Because the symptoms of pneumonias caused by respiratory viruses are mild, patients with pneumonia can sometimes confuse their symptoms, and can often believe they have a harmless cold when in fact they have an atypical pneumonia.
