Ulcerative Colitis can have a profound impact on the quality of life of patients. Many patients experience frequent relapses that cause much distress and lead to significant morbidity. Ulcerative Colitis is not limited to adults, rather we can encounter Ulcerative Colitis in young patients as well. Depending on the severity of Ulcerative Colitis, treatment can range from traditional treatments with mesalamine to the more recent biologicals that modulate the immune system. Although there are numerous medications that can control the symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis, none of them is a cure, and patients having Ulcerative Colitis frequently experience failure of their medication that requires switching to a new drug. In other cases, patients who have their medications withdrawn frequently experience a relapse of their Ulcerative Colitis, a fact that suggests an ongoing underlying process driving the disease. There is a need for a better understanding of the etiology of Ulcerative Colitis that will facilitate better management and ultimately a cure.
